Background of the Study
Academic stress is a pervasive issue among secondary school students, particularly in urban centers such as Abuja (FCT), where competitive educational environments and high expectations can lead to significant psychological strain. In Abuja, students face various stressors including academic workload, examination pressure, and the demands of balancing extracurricular activities with studies. This high-pressure environment is often associated with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems among adolescents (Okeke, 2023; Adeniyi, 2024). The impact of academic stress is further amplified by factors such as insufficient coping mechanisms, lack of mental health support in schools, and societal pressures to excel academically. The resultant anxiety not only affects students’ academic performance but also has long-term implications for their overall well-being and future career prospects. Understanding the extent and determinants of academic stress and its relationship with anxiety is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems within the educational framework of Abuja. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of academic stress, its effects on anxiety levels, and potential coping strategies that can help mitigate these adverse outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Secondary school students in Abuja (FCT) face mounting academic pressures that have led to elevated levels of stress and anxiety. The competitive nature of the educational system, combined with high parental and societal expectations, often overwhelms students, leading to mental health issues. Despite the availability of counseling services in some schools, many students do not have access to adequate mental health support or stress management resources, resulting in untreated anxiety and a decline in academic performance (Chukwu, 2023). Additionally, the lack of comprehensive research on the specific stressors affecting students in Abuja complicates the development of targeted interventions. As a result, the cumulative effect of academic stress is not only detrimental to individual students but also has broader implications for educational outcomes and overall youth mental health. This gap in understanding necessitates a detailed investigation into academic stress and anxiety among secondary school students in Abuja to inform policy and practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of academic stress and anxiety among secondary school students in Abuja (FCT).
2. To identify key academic and environmental stressors contributing to student anxiety.
3. To recommend interventions for reducing academic stress and improving mental health support in schools.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of academic stress and anxiety among secondary school students in Abuja?
2. Which academic stressors are most strongly associated with anxiety?
3. What school-based interventions can effectively reduce academic stress?
Research Hypotheses
1. High academic pressure is significantly associated with increased anxiety levels among secondary school students.
2. Lack of effective stress management resources correlates with higher anxiety.
3. Implementing comprehensive counseling and stress reduction programs will significantly lower anxiety levels.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on secondary schools in Abuja (FCT). Data will be collected through student surveys, anxiety screening tools, and interviews with school counselors. Limitations include potential response bias and the difficulty in isolating academic stress from other life stressors.
